چکیده

The paper summarizes the Wisconsin Wind Tunnel Project’s research into parallel computer design and methods. Our principal design contributions—Cooperative Shared Memory and the Tempest Parallel Programming Substrate—seek to balance the programming benefits of a shared address space with facilities for low-level performance optimizations. The project has refined and compared a variety of ideas with a unique mixture of techniques that include microarchitecture-level simulation, software prototyping, and rapid hardware prototyping. An important by-product of this research has been innovative tools, such as the Wisconsin Wind Tunnel and the Executable Editing Library.

Simulation of the SCI Transport Layer on the Wisconsin Wind Tunnel

Parallel simulation of parallel machines is fast becoming a critical technique for the evaluation of new parallel architectures and architectural extensions. Fast and accurate simulation of the interconnection network in parallel simulators is extremely difficult, but also extremely important. In this report, we describe an extension to the Wisconsin Wind Tunnel that simulates the transport lay...

Fast and Portable Parallel Architecture Simulators: Wisconsin Wind Tunnel II

Analysis of future parallel computers requires rapid simulation of target designs running realistic workloads. These simulations have been accelerated by two techniques: direct execution and the use of a parallel host. Historically, these techniques have been considered to lack portability. We identify four key operations necessary to make these simulations portable. This allows us to run the W...

Wisconsin Wind Tunnel II: a fast, portable parallel architecture simulator

direct execution and parallel simulation. In direct execution, a program from the target system runs on an existing host system.1 For example, a target’s floating-point multiply executes as a floating-point multiply instruction on the host. The host calculates the target’s execution time and simulates only those operations unavailable on the host. Direct execution can run orders of magnitude fa...

Speed Detection in Wind-Tunnels by processing Schlieren Images (RESEARCH NOTE)

Schlieren imaging in wind-tunnels is extensively utilized to study the effects of air on an airplane surface. One of the interesting subjects for research is to study the effects of speed change on the airplane surface. Speed change results in occurrence of shock waves, which are visualized as lines on Schlieren images. In this paper, we study the problem of detecting speed of a plane after occ...

Accuracy vs. performance in parallel simulation of interconnection networks

Parallel simulation is emerging as the dominant technique for studying parallel computers. However, the interconnection networks of these machines can be modeled at many different levels of abstraction, allowing researchers to trade off accuracy and performance. In this paper, we use the Wisconsin Wind Tunnel, a parallel simulator for cache-coherent shared-memory machines, to study the trade-of...
